Rapidly growing fungus ball on prosthetic valve: Candida albicans endocarditis
نویسندگان
چکیده
A 58-year-old woman presented with recent history of fever. She had history of prosthetic aortic and mitral valve implanted four years ago. Blood cultures were negative and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) detected a large mass within the mitral prosthesis (Fig. 1a, Video 1). After seven days under antibiotherapy, repeated TEE revealed rapidly growing giant vegetation within the valve leaflets (Fig. 1b-d, Video 2, 3). Surgery was performed and rejection material showed fungus ball (Fig. 2a). Cultures and histopathological examinations (Fig. 2b, 3a, b) were positive for Candida albicans. Candida albicans is one of the most important fungal pathogens, caused prosthetic valve endocarditis in our case, with predisposing factors such as major operations, prosthetic material, total parenteral nutrition, broad-spectrum antibiotics, diabetes mellitus, and immunosuppression. Our patient had parenteral nutrition and broad-spectrum antibiotics. A combination of surgical resection and antifungal drug therapy is the Gold standard for treatment.

Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by multidrug-resistant Candida albicans in a patient with myelodysplasia syndrome: A case report and literature review
Background and Purpose: Candida endocarditis is an infrequent disease with a high mortality rate, which commonly occurs in immunosuppressed patients with cardiac valve replacement. We reported a 70-year-old woman diagnosed with Candida prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). This study also involved a review of all published cases of Candida PVE from 1970. Case report: Herein, we reported a 70-ye...
متن کاملFungal Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis by Candida parapsilosis: A Case Report
INTRODUCTION Fungal prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is rare but serious complication of valve replacement surgery. Candida species, particularly Candida albicans is the most common isolated pathogen in fungal PVE (1-6%of cases). CASE PRESENTATION We describe a 35-year-old woman who underwent mechanical mitral valve replacement about 3 years ago. She was admitted with neurological symptoms...
متن کاملCandida tropicalis causing prosthetic valve endocarditis.
The incidence of endocarditis produced by the so-called "opportunists" as a complication of prosthetic valve surgery is progressively increasing in frequency and gradually transforming the clinical picture habitually associated with this disease. Candida endocarditis is an unusual but severe complication caused by Candida albicans or other fungal species. This case and a review of the literatur...
متن کاملExperimental endocarditis. IV. Tricuspid and aortic valve infection with Candida albicans in rabbits.
Candida albicans is a pathogen of increasing significance in man and is the most common cause of fungal infection in patients with underlying disease(l). Endocardial infection with this microorganism usually occurs on previously damaged heart valves or after the placement of prosthetic heart valves(2). The route of entry of candida in these patients is believed to be the blood stream because of...
متن کاملPost-Cardiac Surgery Fungal Endocarditis
Infective endocarditis (IE) is a threatening disease associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. The most etiologic agents are the bacteria followed by fungi. Fungal Endocarditis (FE) is an uncommon occurrence and the most severe form of IE, however, its rate has increased in recent decades. The first report of FE after a mitral valve replacement was in 1964 (1) but there have been ...
